The Michael Phelps Pot Incident.

If you live under a rock and dont know who Michael Phelps is... Ill fill you in. He has been in several Olympic games and most recently won 8 gold medals at the games in Beijing back in August. Apparently, thats more gold medals than anyone has won at an Olympic games, ever. Huge accomplishment! Good for him!

Michael Phelps is also a tall, lanky, awkward college aged kid. And he made a big mistake recently. In the day and age of digital cameras and cell phones that can do anything imaginable, he decided to hit a bong at a crowed party. Dummy. Obviously 8 gold medals does nothing for one's sensibility. I dont care that he decided to smoke weed... it's his choice. Whatever. I dont think he should be stripped of his medals... its pot, not steroids for Pete's sake... its makes a person slow and lazy, not lightening fast.

What pisses me off is that the news has decided to splash this image ALL over everything. My children have now heard the word BONG. They have seen the picture. Noice, huh? I couldnt get to the remote fast enough to change the station. Of course, they werent paying much attention, but they WERE in the same room. Before they could ask questions I told them that Michael Phelps made a bad choice and left it at that. It irks me that newscasters think that things like this are considered "big" news. Its not, its nothing. I feel like I cant even click on the news to catch the weather with the kids in the room anymore... I can totally see why people choose not to have tv's in their houses.

Sigh. Anyway, just a personal rant... carry on.

  1. I hear ya, Wendy. I got so tired of the media that I just don't watch the news anymore. They make a big deal about what they think is a big deal...usually scummy sort of thing...bad decisions...and worse. And the brush the good stuff under the rug, etc. It's all got their own agendas stamped all over it. I haven't got time or energy to process their sensationalizing.

From time to time I think I should start watching the news again..."because that's what grownups do." But I have NEVER had much patience for it and just can't quite discipline myself to turn on the tv at the right time to catch it.

    Ah well.

  2. I hear ya too Wendy... I WAS ticked off at Michael Phelps though... My girls probably don't have a clue who he is, nor do they probably care. But I don't appreciate the media splashing pictures of him using his bong. ::GRR::

  3. I know what you mean - Michael Phelps is still a kid (I have a 23 y/o boy) who does stupid things - that shouldn't be HEADLINE NEWS. When my boys were much younger I had to listen to a newscaster announce the "debate" over condoms in L.A.'s high schools while I was fixing dinner... of course, that was followed by a 10-year old asking "Mom, what's a condom??" ;)
